THE TENDER IDOLS - The Tender Odols
(Idolart Music - 1996) Out Of Print CD

Personnel:
Ian Webber - Vocals, Tambourine
danny Howes - Guitar
Scott Collins - Bass, Vocals
Guy Strauss - Drums

Here's a decent slice of Britpop done by a bunch of Americans (except for Ian webber who is from the UK). I picked this up for 50¢ years ago because I like the cover and it had the 'Mod' target on it. Some nice melodies and choruses.

AMG Album Review:
While most Anglophilic ears were tuned into the Beatles-inspired sounds emanating from Mother England in the mid-'90s, a few American bands were offering the same sort of retro-pop pleasures. Atlanta's Tender Idols positioned themselves at the head of that pack -- and not just because they boasted their very own British-born frontman, Ian Webber, for extra credibility. At their best on this ten-song debut, Tender Idols match the efforts of past-plundering bands like Oasis and Blur; given that the songs are served up with a smile instead of a sneer, it's tempting to say they're better. Whichever is true, there's no arguing with the breathless, jangly rush of "For Love I'd Die" or the heartfelt balladry of "Sunlovers." Tender Idols do fall prey to some of the same weaknesses that afflicted many of their U.K. contemporaries: showing off on a blustering bluesy yawner ("International") and working a bit too close to Morrissey's bed ("Realife"). Such failings can only be redeemed with a dose of good, old-fashioned singalong pop -- and luckily, there's enough of it here to do the trick.

AMG Band Bio:
Ever since the Tender Idols came together in 1994, their very melodic alternative rock has been categorized as Brit-pop, which is ironic because most members of the Atlanta-based band are American. Lead singer Ian Webber is the only member who actually grew up in England, although he had moved to the U.S. by the time he decided to form the Tender Idols with guitarist Danny Howes. One thing that all members of the band have in common -- whether they grew up in the U.K. or Atlanta -- is a love of British rock. The Tender Idols have often been compared to British alternative rockers like Oasis and Radiohead, and their influences (direct or indirect) range from the Stone Roses and Suede to the Beatles, David Bowie, Badfinger, and Pink Floyd. Webber and Howes first hooked up in 1993, when they met through an ad in an Atlanta newspaper called Creative Loafing. Webber had moved to the U.S. to pursue a career in photography; he initially chose Athens, GA, because of a girlfriend who was attending college there, but ended up leaving Athens for Atlanta. Ready to form a band, Webber and Howes auditioned various musicians before hiring bassist Joe Jones and drummer Guy Strauss in 1994. At first, the Tender Idols were a quartet, but they eventually became a quintet when David Cobb was hired as a second guitarist and background vocalist. The band's self-titled debut album came out on in 1996 and was followed by Step On Over in 1998 and Distressor in 2001.
